The author of a new book that claims the Trump campaign colluded with Russia defended a controversial dossier put together on President Donald Trump in a new interview.

Journalist Luke Harding wrote "Collusion: Secret Meetings, Dirty Money, and How Russia Helped Donald Trump Win." He told Business Insider the dossier written by former British spy Christopher Steele is "standing up pretty well" as more Russia revelations become public.

"Saying the dossier is fake news doesn't make it fake news. It's just an assertion," Harding said.

"According to people I've talked to, who are kind of close to [Steele], believe that the dossier is not flawless. One or two things may be wrong. He acknowledges that there's raw intelligence but broadly he thinks it's right. And he says it's between 70-90 percent correct. That's his assessment, which for an intelligence report, is pretty good.

"As we learn more about the Trump team and engagements with Russia, we were told to begin with, 'nothing to see here.' I think the dossier is standing up pretty well."

Harding went on to explain that Steele was a trusted source of information as an intelligence agent and as a private citizen, supplying briefs to U.S. intelligence in recent years.

Steele is also a Russia expert after leading the Russia desk at MI6 before he left the agency for the private sector.

Harding didn't necessarily say he believes the scandalous dossier is true, but he did note that special counsel Robert Mueller is trying to get to the bottom of all things involving Trump and Russia.

"And we now have a special prosecutor, Bob Mueller, who's examining all of this," Harding said. "We have Trump firing the head of the FBI, James Comey, because of 'the Russia thing,' which was kind of vexing him. And we … have a process going forward to try and verify all of this and I think really that's all that Steele wanted."
