A CBS report on Sunday's "60 Minutes" told the story of illegal immigration and the imperfect system that develops when trying to deal with the issue. The program highlighted the story of Roberto Beristain, who was recently deported to Mexico after living in the U.S. for nearly 20 years.

Friends and neighbors who voted for President Donald Trump expressed regret that Beristain was among those who had been deported, explaining he had become a business owner in the small town of Granger, Ind., and had no criminal record, The Hill reported. Beristain's wife and children are U.S. citizens.

"It just feels wrong," Kimberly Glowacki, a resident of Granger, said.

Michelle Craig said she voted for Trump because he had promised to deport dangerous criminals, but said, "This is not the person he said he would deport," adding, "the community is better for having someone like" Beristain in it.

Beristain worked as a cook and was the new owner of "Eddie's Steak Shed." He had entered the country illegally in 1998, and under the administration of former President Barack Obama had received a temporary work permit, Social Security number and driver's license.

"I voted for him because he said he was going to get rid of the bad hombres -- Roberto is a good hombre," resident Dave Keck said.

"I mean, he showed up here with just the shirt on his back and he's a restaurant owner 20 years later . . . and he worked his butt off to get there," added Matt Leliaert.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told "60 Minutes" in a statement Beristain had a "final order of removal" against him which led to his deportation.

The realities of Trump's crackdown on illegal immigrants show the shifting landscape of the effects of immigration policies from those under Obama. ICE reports the number of arrests of undocumented immigrants with no criminal records has risen under Trump, nearly doubling since he first signed the illegal immigrant deportation executive order.

"The only bad thing he's done is stayed in the United States because he loves this country," said Beristain's wife, Helen. "That's his only crime."

Helen Beristain, a legal immigrant, also voted for Trump.
