The Trump brand is enjoying widespread popularity in India at a fruitful time for the Trump Organization and as President Donald Trump has strengthened ties with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the last few months, but Indians don't see much of a distinction between politics and real estate, The New York Times reports.

Donald Trump Jr. is set to land in India on Monday for a weeklong trip to tout luxury residential units being built by the Trumps and their local partners in four cities while the president in Washington, D.C., has pledged "to strengthen security and economic cooperation" between India and the U.S. and has taken a harder stance toward Pakistan and China, two of India's rivals.

"The idea that the president's son would be going and shilling the president's brand at same time Donald Trump is president and is managing strategic and foreign relations with India — that is just bizarre," Daniel S. Markey, a senior fellow for India, Pakistan and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations from 2007-2015, told the Times.

The marketing materials for the Trump buildings in India flout exclusive amenities and the opportunity to become "members of the Trump family," but do not include the president or his daughter Ivanka anywhere, as both work in the White House.

Regardless, the Trump name is a "lead generator" according to Kalpesh Mehta, head of the Mumbai-based development company Tribeca.

"It is what is making people pay attention and look at it deeply," he told the Times.

Added academic and newspaper columnist Madhav Das Nalapat: "India is a hierarchical society. Trump is now leading the No. 1 country in the world, so his brand has higher value. That counts. It's not who he is. It's what he is."
