Former Pope Benedict XVI has written a poignant letter in which he reveals he is increasingly frail, but is at peace with the prospect of death.

In a note sent to the editor of the Italian news daily Il Corriere della Sera, the 90-year-old ex-pontiff says he is in the "last period" of his life.

"I can only say that with the slow waning of my physical forces, I'm on a pilgrimage towards home," Benedict writes.

"It is a great gift for me to be surrounded, on this last stretch of this sometimes tiring road, by a degree of love and goodwill that I could never have imagined."

His note — delivered in an envelope marked "urgent, by hand" to the Rome office of Il Corriere della Sera — was published on the front page of Wednesday's editions.

He said he was "moved that so many readers want to know how I spend my days in this, the last period of the life."

Benedict retired as Pope in 2013, becoming the first pontiff in 600 years to resign as leader of the Vatican.

Since then, he has resided as pope emeritus in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery located inside Vatican City and close to where Pope Francis lives.
