Pompeo: World Must Do Part to Keep Sea Lanes Open

By    |   Monday, 22 July 2019 09:47 AM

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Monday denied that U.S. sanctions were at fault for the seizure of a British-flagged oil tanker and said the United Kingdom is responsible for taking care of its own ships and the world must do its part to keep sea lanes in the region open.

"This is because of the theocracy, the leadership in Iran," Pompeo told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."

"Their revolutionary zeal to conduct terror around the world, for now, four decades continues."

The Iranian regime, by seizing the British ship, has now conducted "what amounts to national piracy," said Pompeo.

"This is the kind of behavior we've seen out of Iran for 40 years," said Pompeo. "The United States has a responsibility to do our part, but the world's got a big role in this too, to keep these sea lanes open. I'm convinced they will do that. I'm ultimately convinced the Iranian people will get the leadership behavior they so richly deserve."

Meanwhile, Pompeo also does not think President Donald Trump's "restrained and prudent" response to Iran's shooting down a U.S. drone has emboldened the nation's regime.

"They understand that America is powerful," he said. "You've seen us move a few resources into the region. You've seen us respond in ways that are restrained. We don't want war with Iran. We want them to behave like a normal nation. I think they understand that and I think the whole world is waking up to that this threat is real."
