A spokesman for the family of imprisoned spy Jonathan Pollard confirmed he was hospitalized today after losing consciousness, The Jerusalem Post reports.

"Unfortunately, we do not have any further information, but we are hoping and praying since he has been hospitalized in the past in very dangerous circumstances," Pollard spokesman Effi Lahav told the Post.

Pollard, 60, has experienced several health problems since he began serving a life sentence in 1987 and underwent surgery in March to address issues related to the malfunctioning of his kidneys, gallbladder, and intestines, according to the Post.

A civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, Pollard was arrested in 1985 for providing Israel with thousands of classified documents and is eligible for parole next year.

Earlier this year, it was learned that the Obama administration was engaged in discussions with Israel concerning a possible Pollard release, which marked a substantial break from the policy of previous Republican and Democratic administrations, Politico reported in March.

In exchange for an early release for Pollard, Israel would have be asked to make concessions to the Palestinians, including releasing Palestinian prisoners and extending peace talks.

The White House would not confirm the nature of the talks and reiterated that the president had not reached a decision.

"First of all, the president has not made a decision to release Jonathan Pollard. Jonathan Pollard was convicted of espionage and he is serving his sentence," said then-White House press secretary Jay Carney in April.

"There are obviously a lot of things happening in that arena, and I’m not going to get ahead of discussions that are underway. What I will tell you is that the president has not made a decision to release Jonathan Pollard," he added.

In late November, the Campaign for the Release of Jonathan Pollard activist group confirmed that Justice Department parole board had rejected a request for his release, according to The Times of Israel.

Shortly after his request for early parole was rejected, Pollard's wife, Esther, met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who told her his government would be "working constantly to secure Jonathan Pollard’s release and would not slacken in its efforts until he comes home," according to israelnationalnews.
