About one in five Americans know a friend or family member who has shared a story about sexual harassment or sexual assault on social media, according to a CNN poll released Thursday.

Among the poll's results:

  • 66 percent say they have heard a lot of news stories about sexual harassment and assault.
  • 52 percent say these stories will reduce the amount of sexual harassment and assault that women face.
  • 74 percent say the stories will lead to more understanding of what constitutes sexual harassment and assault.
  • 44 percent say that the attention the accusations get will make it more difficult for men and women to interact in the workplace.
  • 23 percent of women reported having seen stories about harassment or assault from friends, while 15 percent of men said they had.
  • 30 percent of women under 50 had seen such social media posts, while 20 percent of men under 50 had seen them.
  • 13 percent said that a close friend or family member had told them personally in the last month about sexual harassment or assault that they had not told them before.

Most of those who took the poll said they were not surprised by the behaviors being described in the stories as sexual assault. Seventy-six percent of all who took the poll were not surprised.

Breaking down the poll between men and women, 18 percent of both genders said they were surprised.

The poll was conducted by SSRS by telephone from Nov. 2 to 5 among a random sample around the U.S. of 1,021 adults, with a sampling error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Congress has a "serious problem" with sexual harassment and assault, said Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., Wednesday.
