For the first time, a majority of Americans approve of Obamacare, according to a new Gallup poll.

The survey released Tuesday found that 55 percent of Americans support the Affordable Care Act, a big turnaround from just after the 2016 presidential election, when 42 percent approved and 53 percent disapproved.

According to Gallup, it's the first time Obamacare has gotten majority approval since the pollster first asked about it in November 2012.

Despite the majority approval, those surveyed have varying opinions on the future of the act:

  • 26 percent want to keep Obamacare largely as it is.
  • 40 percent want to keep the law in place but make significant changes.
  • 30 percent want to repeal and replace it, the poll showed.

Of those who want to keep the law but make significant changes:

  • 49 percent want Congress to continue to work on healthcare in the next few months
  • 49 percent, would like to see Congress turn its attention to other issues for the time being.

Of those who who want Obamacare repealed and replaced:

  • 64 percent say Congress should continue to work on healthcare
  • 32 percent say Congress should turn to other issues.

Gallup conducted the telephone interviews from April 1 2 with a random sample of 1,023 adults. The margin of error is ±4 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
