President Barack Obama has an approval rating of 60 percent, the highest it has been since his first year in office and is one of the most popular among outgoing presidents, according to a CNN/ORC poll released on Wednesday.

Only Bill Clinton at 66 percent and Ronald Reagan at 64 percent left office with higher approval ratings among recent presidents, although the assessment of Obama is marked by sharp partisan divides.

While all three of the above presidents held approval ratings above 90 percent from those in their own party, Obama earned only 18 percent approval from Republicans, while both Reagan and Clinton had 38-39 percent approval from those in the opposing party.

Other finding in the survey include:

  • 65 percent say Obama's presidency was a success, including 49 percent who say it was due to his personal strengths rather than circumstances outside his control.
  • 25 percent said Obama is one of the greatest presidents, but 23 percent called him a poor president, reflecting a much starker divide than other outgoing presidents.
  • 50 percent say things in the country are generally going well, up from only 21 percent who thought that at the start of his first term.
  • 57 percent say economic conditions are good, compared with only13 percent who thought so at the beginning of his first term.
  • Americans gave Obama positive ratings for handling the economy, foreign affairs and race relations, as well as his work on education, policies toward gays and lesbians, environmental policy and climate change.
  • However, the majority disapproved of his gun policy and his handling of Islamic State.
  • 47 percent said the country will be better four years from now, while 48 percent said it will be worse

The CNN/ORC poll was conducted on Jan. 12-15 among a random national sample of 1,000 adults. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
