More Americans say Vice President Kamala Harris is very liberal than say former President Donald Trump is very conservative, a new The Economist/YouGov poll found.
Asked about Harris' perceived ideology, 37% of voters say the Democrat presidential candidate is "very liberal," the survey results show. Another 26% say she is "liberal."
When asked about Trump's perceived ideology, 28% say the Republican presidential candidate is "very conservative" and another 32% say he is "conservative."
The results, in part, are due to Democrats (40%) being less likely to say Trump is very conservative than Republicans (71%) saying Harris is very liberal.
Only 6% of Republicans say they are "not sure" of Harris' ideology while 23% of Democrats say they are "not sure" of Trump's even though he has been the party's presidential nominee for three consecutive elections.
"Democrats identify themselves as liberal and moderate and see their candidate as liberal or moderate," columnist Philip Bump wrote in The Washington Post about the YouGov/Economist poll. "Republicans identify themselves as conservative and see their candidate as conservative.
"But presumably in part because Trump has already shifted 'conservatism' to the right, his ideology is seen as less fervent than his opponent's overall."
Nevertheless, Trump and Harris have spelled out their ideas in speeches, advertisements, and other venues. Many of their proposals lack specifics, making it difficult to judge exactly how they would translate their intentions into law or pay for them.
While the candidates agree on not taxing workers' tips, the outcome in November could drastically change the tax code, America's support for Ukraine, abortion access, and the commitments made to limit the damage caused by climate change.
The YouGov/Economist poll also found 7 in 10 Republicans describe themselves as "conservative."
Nearly 4 in 10 Democrats describe themselves as "moderate," compared to 2 in 10 Republicans saying the same.
