Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has taken a commanding lead over his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination in the latest poll from The Washington Post and ABC News released Wednesday.
Sanders was the only candidate to win over 30% support among Democrats and independents who lean Democrat, with former Vice President Joe Biden coming in second with just under 20%, a sizable drop from the last Post/ABC poll, which was conducted before the primaries began. Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg came third, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., came fourth, former South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg came fifth, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., came in sixth.
- Sanders: 32%.
- Biden: 17%.
- Bloomberg: 14%.
- Warren: 11%.
- Buttigieg: 7%.
- Klobuchar: 6%.
With 15 points more than Biden, Sanders has almost doubled the former vice president’s largest lead in a poll. Biden’s electability rating also has taken a hit, falling well below Sanders and almost tying with Bloomberg. When asked who has the best chance of beating Trump:
- Sanders: 30%
- Biden: 19%
- Bloomberg: 18%
- Warren: 3%
In a general election matchup with Trump, voters chose:
- Trump over Biden: 45%.
- Biden over Trump: 52%.
- Trump over Sanders: 45%
- Sanders over Trump: 51%.
- Trump over Bloomberg: 45%.
- Bloomberg over Trump: 50%.
- Trump over Buttigieg: 46%.
- Buttigieg over Trump: 49%.
- Trump over Klobuchar: 46%.
- Klobuchar over Trump: 48%.
- Trump over Warren: 47%.
- Warren over Trump: 48%.
Langer Research Associates of New York conducted the poll with sampling and data collection by Abt Associates of Rockville, Md., on behalf of ABC News and the Washington Post by phone from Feb. 14-17, with a random national sample of 1,066 adults and a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
