A wide majority of Americans — 84 percent — support banning gun purchases for people under 21, Harris Poll chairman Mark Penn wrote in The Hill.

The Harris Poll, conducted for the organization No Labels, showed that support for the ban stretched across party lines.

  • 92 percent of Democrats favored the ban.
  • 83 percent of independents favored the ban.
  • 77 percent of Republicans favored the ban.

In the aftermath of the Parkland, Florida high school shooting, more attention is being paid to fears of Americans about guns, Penn wrote in the Hill.

"It turns out that the bell curve of murders peaks at ages 21 to 24, with about one in five involving those age 21 or under. This suggests that delaying gun purchasing could have at least some actual impact on the murder rate, just as raising the alcohol age helped reduce drunk-driving deaths," Penn wrote.

Regarding the Parkland, Florida shooting, 57 percent of those in a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll said that lack of attention to mental health issues is a more vital issue than gun safety.

In that poll, which was conducted from Feb. 16-19, 61 percent of respondents said they favored a complete ban on assault rifles, but almost 40 percent of households have a gun and their owners feel strongly about their gun rights, Penn noted.

"The gist of this polling is straightforward: Gun legislation is one piece of a complex set of issues we need to tackle to deal with school shootings most effectively."

The poll chairman wrote that politics played into the debate too quickly. "Democrats were yelling, 'guns, guns, guns,’ and Republicans like House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., were quick to talk about mental health, but looked at the ceiling when gun safety was mentioned," Penn wrote.

Stronger background checks and "some age restrictions on at least some guns" should be the logical result of the debate, Penn wrote. "The alternative is more gridlock and public frustration."

A Wednesday poll from Politico and Morning Consult also addressed gun control. In that poll, 68 percent of registered voters favor stricter gun laws.
