A 25-year-old man in South Los Angeles was arrested Friday in connection to a “Call of Duty” swatting hoax that led to a fatal shooting in Kansas, Fox News reports.

Swatting, an online gaming prank where a false report is made to get a SWAT team to descend on an address, has gained popularity across the country with online gamers. Police say Tyler Barriss reported a fake homicide and hostage situation to the Wichita Police Department just after 6:15 p.m. Thursday, telling 911 his father had been shot in the head and that he was holding his mother and a sibling at gunpoint.

“This call was little peculiar for us,” Deputy Chief Troy Livingston of the Wichita Police Department said at a news conference Friday. “(The call) went to a substation first, then it was relayed to dispatch, then dispatch gave it to us. We have a lot of information to go through.”

“If the false police call had not been made, we would not have been there,” he added.

The address Barriss reportedly gave was the home of Andrew Finch, 28. After police raced to the scene and surrounded the house, Finch emerged and was shot and killed after police say he didn’t follow commands to keep his arms raised.

An online gaming news service said Barriss and another man, not Finch, got into an argument over a $1 or $2 wager in a “Call of Duty” game.
