Rep. Peter King Thursday praised the Clinton Foundation for its decision to no longer accept corporate or foreign donations should Hillary Clinton win in November, but "why it was allowed to go on during the time she was secretary of state?"

"I think it's the right thing going toward the future," the New York Republican, who said he had "a good personal relationship" with the Clintons, told Brianna Keilar on CNN. "I think they were wrong on the foundation.

"She should have known as secretary of state the conflicts or appearance of conflicts being raised by accepting all this money from foreign donors, who people had involvement with overseas interests — and it really raises questions about her judgment."

Former President Bill Clinton told foundation staffers that the organization would not accept those donations should the former first lady be elected to the White House, The Associated Press reports.

The foundation also ends its annual Clinton Global Initiative summit regardless of the outcome of the November election, according to the report.

A formal announcement from the Clinton Foundation was forthcoming. The organization, founded in 1997, has raised more than $2 billion for various humanitarian causes around the world.

During Hillary Clinton's campaign, the foundation has come under scrutiny — and The Boston Globe on Wednesday demanded in an editorial that the Clintons shut down the entity should voters send her to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in the fall.

"It is the right thing to do going forward," King told CNN. "We'll have to see the fine print, but to the extent they will be stopping money coming from overseas if she is the president is the right thing.

"Again, why did she allow it to go on during the time she was secretary of state?"

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called the move "too little, too late."

"If everything was above board while Hillary Clinton ran the State Department, as the Clintons have said, then why change a thing?" Priebus asked.

"But now that they have admitted there is a problem, the Clinton Foundation should immediately cease accepting foreign donations and return every penny ever taken from other countries, several of which have atrocious human rights records and ties to terrorism."
