The top LGBTQ super PAC in California will spend $100,000 to support former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, Politico reports.

Equality California Votes will run a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Blade, one of the city's most prominent LGBTQ publications, and will target California voters with calls and Facebook spots backing Buttigieg, who is openly gay.

"There's a strong contingent of LGBTQ voters and donors that are very excited about his candidacy," Equality California Votes spokesperson Tony Hoang told Politico.

"They helped plant the initial seed to launch his campaign. We hope and expect that LGBTQ voters will come out and support him, but he's building a broad coalition" that extends beyond that bloc.

California's Democratic primary takes place March 3, Super Tuesday, and is the most populous state to vote on that day. Recent polls show the former mayor trailing his Democratic competitors, and state rules decree a candidate must receive at least 15% in the primary to gain any statewide delegates, though House district delegates would still be available to candidates who fail to reach that threshold.

Hoang added Buttigieg will "continue to outperform and clear that 15 percent mark in California."
