The Pentagon this week will begin putting together the pillars needed to create a Space Force, a new branch of the military that does not yet have the approval from Congress, Defense One reports.
President Donald Trump has ordered the creation of the Space Force, and so the Defense Department in the coming months will go to work on three pieces it can without prior approval from Congress, Defense One reports.
Citing a draft that will be delivered to Congress on Wednesday, Defense One reports those three components are:
- "A new combatant command for space."
- "A new joint agency to buy satellites for the military."
- "A new warfighting community that draws space operators from all service branches."
The fourth pillar is the official creation of another branch of the military, the Space Force, and that will require congressional approval as part of Trump's 2020 budget proposal, Defense One reports.
"DoD will usher in a new age of space technology and field new systems in order to deter, and if necessary degrade, deny, disrupt, destroy and manipulate adversary capabilities to protect U.S. interests, assets and way of life," the draft reads, Defense One reports.
"This new age will unlock growth in the U.S. industrial base, expand the commercial space economy and strengthen partnerships with our allies," the report reads.
The plan was developed by Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, the Pentagon’s No. 2 civilian, Defense One reports.
