The Pentagon is the last remaining opponent to the White House’s proposals to greatly reduce the number of refugees who are allowed to enter the U.S., NBC News reports.

The Department of Defense has reportedly expressed their opposition to reducing the annual limit on refugee admissions, which currently stands at 30,000, the historic low for the country’s refugee program, which is overseen by the State Department. The Pentagon has also suggested that the program reserve 6,000 spots for Iraqi applicants who assisted U.S. forces in the country, such as interpreters.

White House adviser Stephen Miller, the official behind the administration’s attempts to stem immigration, has called for significant cuts to the number of refugees allowed in the country in the next fiscal year, which begins next month. The White House is considering lowering the cap on refugee admissions to 15,000 or lower and keeping a certain number of spots open for Iraqis.

"Current ongoing discussions for this year's refugee ceiling are pre-decisional and it would not be appropriate to comment at this time," Pentagon spokesperson Lt. Col. Carla Gleason told NBC, adding that Iraqis and Afghans who helped the U.S. government risked their lives and this should be taken into consideration.

"For that reason, leadership of the Department of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff want to ensure that we fulfill our commitments to those who have provided support to our diplomatic and military efforts abroad to protect the homeland and support key aspects of the president's national security strategy," she said.
