There will be "hell to pay" if Senate Republicans don't pass a universal background check bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned Monday during a press conference with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats.

“Some of the gun violence prevention groups have upped the ante even further to say that if this bill is not passed, (Senate Majority Leader) Mitch McConnell and Republicans in the Senate and the president will have hell to pay, so let's save time," Pelosi said, reports The Hill.

Her comments came during Congress' first day back at work following the mass shootings that happened in Texas and Ohio while lawmakers were on their summer recess.

Pelosi added that Democrats will make the background checks issue "too hot" for McConnell and President Donald Trump to handle and will not take "no for an answer. We are not going away."

The House cleared its background checks bill back in September, but the legislation has stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate. However, no Republicans in the Senate have signed on to co-sponsor the measure, and Schumer blamed the impasse on Trump and McConnell.

“It is totally up to them and it is on their shoulders," the New York Democrat said. "They can’t escape that responsibility."

McConnell said last week that he'll only bring a gun bill that Trump backs to the Senate floor. The president is now focusing on mental-health-related measures, even though he did call for "meaningful background checks" after the shootings in El Paso and Dayton.

Meanwhile, Democrats say the public overwhelmingly supports background checks for gun buyers. On Monday, a Washington Post-ABC News poll showed that 89 percent of respondents overall and 83 percent of Republicans want background check legislation.
