Primary Foe Paul Nehlen: Ryan 'Nut Job' for Attacking Trump

By    |   Wednesday, 03 August 2016 10:52 PM

Businessman Paul Nehlen, challenging House Speaker Paul Ryan in next week's Republican primary, called his opponent a "nut job" and "Hillary Clinton's shill" on Newsmax TV for criticizing GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Nehlen, running for Wisconsin's first congressional district currently held by Ryan, has found support recently from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and conservative writers Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin. Trump himself, who is holding off supporting Ryan, has said positive things about Nehlen.

All that publicity has helped him raise more than $1 million in his effort that looked like a long shot just a few months ago. Nehlen, in a recent Fox Business Network appearance, cited polling that has shown Ryan's support down to 50 percent, while Nehlen's has climbed to 35 percent.

Real Clear Politics, which uses only polls that meet its criteria, still lists polls from May showing Ryan up 73 and 64 points.

"We are well within striking distance. We had a poll that showed we were killing it," Nehlen told Newsmax.

"We certainly got a whole lot more visibility in the last few days, and we're taking advantage of that," Nehlen told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "Obviously, our message isn't changing. Paul Ryan's not changing. Paul Ryan's still for open borders, and for his corporate donors."

Ryan, he said, "takes every opportunity to take a shot at Donald Trump. And why in the world would the highest elected Republican official in our country be taking shots at Donald Trump? It's absurd in the extreme."

Ryan, who did eventually endorse Trump, has continued to criticize him, including Trump's recent spat with a Gold Star father, whose Muslim American son was killed in combat in Iraq.
