Conservative commentators are accusing CNN and other mainstream news outlets of trying to harass and intimidate the jurors in the trial of President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort by pushing for their personal information in the event they return a not guilty plea against him.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III, who himself has questioned whether special counsel Robert Mueller's team filed charges against Manafort in order to squeeze him for information on Trump, refused to release the jurors' information, saying he fears for their safety after he had been threatened himself.

The demand for information means such entities have "decided to get into the harassment business," writes the American Thinker's Monica Showalter.

"They’re more interested in who the jury is than the court trial itself," she said. "That may well be because they suspect Manafort, whose real crime seems to be serving as Donald Trump’s campaign manager, will walk."

Commentators pointed out that news outlets didn't express an interest in the identities of the jurors until they had started deliberations and asked questions about the meaning of “reasonable doubt.”

William Jacobson, of Legal Insurrection, said the demand could be seen as an act of media intimidation, because the jury has not been sequestered and they may hear about attempts to identify them over the weekend.

The Federalist pointed out that that this isn't CNN's first time to try to intimidate people whose views don't match those of the network. Last July, it threatened to identify a user on Reddit who created an image of the president wrestling a man with CNN’s logo photoshopped onto his face.

"Why do you suppose seven news organizations – all liberal, presumably – wanted to know who the jurors are and where they live?" writes Powerline's John Hinderaker. "They are worried that the jury, having heard the evidence, may not render the 'right' verdict, i.e., the one that helps the Democratic Party."
