Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort no longer deserves credit for cooperating with federal investigators at his sentencing next month, according to special counsel Robert Mueller.
Manafort, who was convicted of tax evasion and bank fraud last August, allegedly lied to federal investigators after agreeing to cooperate with Mueller’s office on the investigation into Russian election interference. Manafort’s defense attorney, Richard Westling, said that his client “did not intentionally lie.”
“We believe that whether there was a breach contends on whether or not he intentionally lied,” Westling told NBC News.
However, Mueller’s office claims that Manafort told “multiple discernible lies,” that could not be the result of “mere memory lapses.”
Both sides will argue the case behind closed doors in a hearing on Feb. 4, Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled on Friday. A redacted transcript will be released afterward.
Manafort is scheduled to be sentenced for his previous convictions on Feb. 8.
