Bill O'Reilly on Charles Krauthammer: An 'Inspiring' and 'Honest' American

Bill O'Reilly on Friday paid a heartfelt tribute to conservative Charles Krauthammer, telling Newsmax the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and conservative pundit as a "great man."

"Charles Krauthammer was a person Americans should emulate," O'Reilly, host of "No Spin News," said of Krauthammer, who died on Thursday at the age of 68 following a battle with cancer.

"Fate dealt him a cruel blow when he was paralyzed after a diving accident as a young man. But Charles graduated from Harvard Medical School and then went on to national success as a journalist. Inspiring doesn't come close to describing what Charles Krauthammer did with his life."

O'Reilly said he had regularly debated Krauthammer on political issues when both worked at the Fox News Channel.

On a personal note, my debates with Charles on the Fox News Channel were epic. He was always smart and honest," O'Reilly, bestselling author of "Killing England: The Brutal Struggle for American Independence," written with Martin Dugard.

"He also did not suffer fools. I liked what Charles had to say not because I always agreed with him, but because his opinion was well thought out and sincerely put forth. A great man."

Krauthammer, who also wrote a regular column in the Washington Post, revealed publicly a year ago he was being treated for a cancerous tumor in his abdomen and earlier this month said he had just weeks to live.

"I leave this life with no regrets," he wrote in a farewell column." It was a wonderful life — full and complete with the great loves and great endeavors that make it worth living. I am sad to leave, but I leave with the knowledge that I lived the life that I intended."

Krauthammer was awarded a Pulitzer in 1987 for "his witty and insightful" commentary.
