Rep. Ilhan Omar, the liberal Minnesota congresswoman who has been under fire for filing taxes with one man while legally married to another is now set to divorce yet again, the Daily Mail reports.
Omar has moved into an upscale apartment in Minneapolis that she stays in without husband Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children, according to the report, though Hirsi does live there when Omar is in Washington. When she returns to Minneapolis, he goes back to their old home, sources told the Daily Mail.
When approached while leaving the apartment recently, Hirsi declined to comment.
"I'm sorry, I just can't say anything," he said before driving away.
He was reportedly seen sitting alone in a Starbucks as his wife received a hero's welcome at the airport following Twitter attacks from President Donald Trump as part of the "Squad" of four liberal freshman female minority Democratic representatives.
In a complicated story, Omar, a refugee from war-torn Somalia, first married Hirsi in 2002 when she was 19 in Muslim religious ceremony that was no recognized legally by the U.S. government. They had two children together before separating in 2008.
In 2009, Omar was legally married to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi two weeks after he arrived in the United States. Several media outlets have identified him as Omar's brother, though there is no irrefutable proof because records in the war-ravaged Somalia have been lost. The two have denied being siblings
Elmi was allowed to study at the same school as Omar because of the marriage, and records indicate that she had returned to living with Hirsi, the father of her children, even though she was married to Elmi at the time.
In 2012 Omar and Hirsi had a third child together and in 2015 filed a joint tax return, even though she still was legally married to Elmi.
Earlier this month, Omar agreed to repay $3,500 in unpaid taxes and a $500 fine.
