Olivia Newton-John's Ex, Patrick McDermott, Thought Drowned, Found Living in Mexico?

Has Olivia Newton-John’s former boyfriend Patrick McDermott, presumed to have drowned in 2005, been found alive in Mexico? A group of private investigators think so.

The investigators hired by Dateline NBC claim they have located McDermott, the New York Daily News reported. Perhaps with another woman, another report suggested, and he doesn’t want to be bothered by anyone.

The news may bring some closure to singer-actress Newton-John, 69, who is fighting her second battle with breast cancer, which returned after 25 years in remission, The Hollywood Reporter noted.

McDermott, 60, a Korean-American lighting technician, was presumed dead after his disappearance from a fishing trip in 2005.

Three years later, a U.S. Coast Guard investigation concluded that McDermott had “most likely drowned,” The Independent reported, but that finding ignited widespread speculation that he had faked his own death to avoid debt.

In an effort to establish whether he was still alive, Dateline NBC hired a team of private investigators to take a second look into the incident in 2009.

The investigators said they were able to track McDermott down by monitoring a collection of IP addresses that had been logging onto a site that followed his presumed whereabouts, leading them to the Mexican-Pacific coast and to McDermott, who had allegedly been living under his birth name, the Daily News said.

According to their report, the investigators concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that McDermott was alive after they managed to retrieve "documentation and voice imprints" from him.

“McDermott's wishes, according to his counsel, is not to be 'hounded' any longer by investigators or the media,” lead investigator Philip Klein said, per the Daily News.

The Australian weekly magazine New Idea claimed to have photographic evidence confirming Klein’s report.

An Investigator told the magazine that they had uncovered a photograph of McDermott about a month ago in the Mexican town of Sayulita.

The image shows a man who bears a striking resemblance to McDermott lounging with an unidentified woman.

Charlie Parker, a private investigator, told the magazine that the man in the photo is likely to be McDermott.

“The widow’s peak is exact” he said.

“The eyes are very similar and the ears extend down on the head in the same distance. I believe it’s him,” Parker said, adding he determined a 90 per cent match between the recently uncovered picture and old photos of the former cameraman.

Newton-John discovered the new cancer four months ago when, having initially thought she had been suffering from sciatica, was told the cancer had spread to her lower back.

"I'm not going to be one of those statistics," she told THR about the diagnosis, as she underwent treatment. “I'm going to be fine. … I think you can live with cancer, like you can live with other things if you take care of yourself."
