GOP Rep. Ogles Files Bill to Defund Jack Smith

By    |   Monday, 14 August 2023 03:32 PM EDT

Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., has filed a bill that would block federal funds from being used to pay the salary of special counsel Jack Smith.

Smith has issued two federal indictments against former President Donald Trump, one in Florida over alleged classified documents and the other in Washington, D.C., accusing Trump of conspiracy and obstruction to overturn the 2020 election.

Ogles filed the bill on Friday. It's called the Yanking Outlays for an Unethical, Ruthless Enterprise that Fraudulently Impedes Robust Electoral Debate Act, or the You're Fired Act.

"Jack Smith is nothing more than a weaponized DOJ pawn in Biden's corrupt scheme to imprison his political opposition ahead of the 2024 election," Ogles posted to social media on Monday. "My legislation would PROHIBIT him from receiving a federal salary, funded by taxpayers."

Reps. Alex Mooney, R-WV, and Eli Crane, R-Ariz., are the bill's co-sponsors.

"Biden's Department of Justice is attempting to muzzle the voice of the American people and forcibly impose the Administration's morally corrupt agenda onto this country," Crane said in a statement. "The weaponization of the DOJ against the political enemies of the Biden Crime Family, by way of left-wing puppet Jack Smith, is contrary to our governing principles."

Trump has pleaded not guilty to the four charges in the Washington, D.C., indictment.

Prosecutors are seeking a Jan. 2 trial date.
