A majority of Americans surveyed believe the Obama Administration lied to the public over the deadly attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, according to a YouGov poll.

Forty-four percent said the Obama administration "deliberately misled" the American people when it claimed al-Qaida did not execute the attack. Thirty percent said the administration "shared facts as they became available" and 25 percent said they were not sure, according to the survey released on Tuesday.

Forty-six percent believe al-Qaida was behind the attack. Sixteen percent said al-Qaida was not responsible and 37 percent said they weren't sure.

The administration has insisted the violent assault was fueled by an American-made video denigrating Islam.

A recent New York Times investigation largely backs up that assertion.

When those polled were asked how President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton handled the Sept. 11, 2012 attack and the aftermath, the president came off worse in the public eye, with 46 percent disapproving how he handled it, compared to 40 per cent who disapproved of Clinton's actions.

US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three others were killed.

The administration has since come under fire from Republican leaders for not doing enough to protect the consulate leading up to the attack.
