President Barack Obama has again compared Republican lawmakers who oppose his Iran nuclear deal to Iran's hardliners.

"What I said is absolutely true, factually," Obama tells CNN's Fareed Zakaria, repeating a comparison he first made Wednesday.

"The truth of the matter is, inside of Iran, the people most opposed to the deal are the Revolutionary Guard, the Quds Force, hardliners who are implacably opposed to any cooperation with the international community," Obama said.

In September, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said lawmakers will hold a comprehensive debate on the Iran nuclear deal.

While Obama has stated that the only way to avoid a war with Iran is a deal, McConnell says, "That's never been the alternative."

"That's an absurd argument, and it's the one they've made from the very beginning, that it's either what the president negotiates with the Iranians or it's war," McConnell said.

According to CNN, after the August recess, Iran is the Senate's first order of business. Lawmakers must vote on whether to approve or disapprove the nuclear deal by Sept. 17.

McConnell has knocked Obama for treating the Iran deal like a "political campaign rather than a serious national security debate."

The only statement McConnell agrees with the president on is that the deal will "completely transform the Middle East." However, he says those changes would not be for the better.

In Zakaria's full interview with Obama, set to air Sunday, Obama said, "The reason that Mitch McConnell and the rest of the folks in his caucus who opposed this jumped out and opposed this before they even read it, before it was even posted, is reflective of a ideological commitment not to get a deal done."

"In that sense, they do have much more in common with the hardliners who are much more satisfied with the status quo."
