NBC: NKorea Calls Itself Nuclear Power; Nukes Not Negotiable

North Korea is not discussing with anyone the possibility of abandoning its nuclear weapons program and has declared itself a nuclear power that deserves respect, according to a new report.

NBC News' Lester Holt reported Monday night from North Korea and said the reclusive nation is "making it clear the nuclear program is not a part of those talks [with South Korea] or even on the table."

Holt also cited a senior government official as saying North Korea will "build on the success of its recent missile tests and says it is a nuclear power now and wants the U.S. to understand that if it feels its sovereignty or dignity were to be threatened, only then would it respond with those weapons."

North and South Korea have begun talking in recent weeks ahead of next month's Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Despite political differences and several threats from the North Korea to destroy its southern neighbor, the two countries will march under one flag at the Opening Ceremony and will even compete as a joint women's hockey team.
