A controversy has erupted between The National Rifle Association and doctors after the NRA told physicians that they should “stay in their own lane” in expressing views over gun control, CNN reported.

The argument started when the NRA sent out a tweet criticizing doctors.

“Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane,” the NRA said. “Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for gun control. Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves.”

The NRA sent out the tweet in response to the American College of Physicians' new position paper that explains its public health approach to reducing deaths and injuries from firearms, NPR reported.

The NRA tweet prompted many physicians to post on social media about their frequent experiences treating patients in the aftermath of gun violence, many of them using the hashtag #ThisIsOurLane.

Forensic pathologist Judy Melinek’s tweet was among the many angry responses that have gone viral.

“Do you have any idea how many bullets I pull out of corpses weekly?”she wrote. This isn’t just my lane. It’s my ***ing highway.”

Another doctor, Joseph Sakran, sent out a tweet with similar sentiments expressing the frustration of the medical community.

“As a Trauma Surgeon and survivor of #GunViolence I cannot believe the audacity of the @NRA to make such a divisive statement, he wrote. “We take care of these patients everyday. Where are you when I’m having to tell all those families their loved one has died. @DocsDemand #Docs4GunSense
