A new proposal would make it mandatory for adults — seniors included — to go back to school in Nordic countries.

Called "Working life in the Nordic region," the proposal, created by the Nordic Council of Ministers, lays out a plan to help extend the working life of adults.

"To prepare ourselves for the future we need to think out of the box in education and training," author Poul Nielson, a Danish politician who reviewed the labor market for the Council writes. "It would be a visionary decision if the Nordic countries, jointly and with the involvement of the social partners, developed a model for putting into practice the principle that adult education and in-service training will be a mandatory element of working life," proposal."

The Nordic countries are Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, along with the territories Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Aland Islands.

"The combination of rapid technological changes and a progressively higher retirement age further increases the need for something new in the education area," Nielson writes.

Speaking to the EU Observer,  Nielson reiterated his point that sending adults back to school is part of his solution to several issues plaguing the workforce.

"The Nordic governments should commit to the principle of introducing mandatory adult and continuing training for everybody in the labor markets," Nielson said.

"After all, the fact that children and young people need to be educated, and that society has a responsibility for this, has not been controversial for over 100 years.

"With a rising pension age, people approaching 60-65 years — who still have 5-10 years more on the labor market — they should have the opportunity to refresh their skills seriously. And as a new mandatory right."
