Critics have found a new way to attack President Donald Trump's decorum Christmas Eve, expressing disapproval of the way he addressed a 7-year-old calling in to talk to Santa Claus.

Sitting with his wife, Melania, before a roaring fireplace under a picture of former President Abraham Lincoln, President Trump asked a 7-year-old over the phone in a video posted by The Daily Beast: "Are you still a believer in Santa? Because at seven it's marginal, right?"

In their version of Christmas cheer, critics railed the question to the kid who was calling in to speak to Santa Claus on a line made available by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which tracks Santa Claus' flight across the globe, a tradition of over 60 years.

The Washington Post's Philip Rucker relished his shot at the president, tweeting: "Trump risked blowing Santa's cover when he asked a child named Coleman, 'Are you still a believer in Santa? Because at seven it's marginal, right?'"

Frequent Trump critic, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., tweeted, twisting the words for a different narrative: "It's just too freaking fantastic that Trump spent his Christmas Eve calling seven year olds and telling them believing in Santa at their age is 'marginal.'"

The criticism extended to where President Trump derision is plentiful – Hollywood – as The Hollywood Reporter tweeted: "Trump takes kids' Christmas calls, questions belief in Santa."

Despite the government shutdown over Senate Democrats' resistance to President Trump's $5 billion request for border wall funding, 1,500 volunteers have kept the NORAD Santa Tracker phone calls going this Christmas Eve.

President Trump and first lady Melania participated from the White House on Monday night after canceling a planned trip to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida because of the shutdown.
