Political pundit and former congressman Joe Scarborough floated a theory Wednesday morning that soon-to-be-former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley may run for president in 2020 — an election he said will not include President Donald Trump.
The "Morning Joe" co-host made the point during a discussion less than 24 hours after Haley announced she will leave her post at the end of the year.
"There's always been talk about Nikki Haley running, possibly running, in 2020. If my theory holds, Donald Trump won't seek reelection," Scarborough said.
"And this way, she's not lining up behind [Vice President] Mike Pence. She's getting out in front of everything. And if you get out before the midterm elections, which could possibly go pretty badly, well, then that stain's not on you, you were already on your way out."
Haley surprised the nation by announcing her intention to step down, a decision that has sparked a firestorm of questions. One thought is that Haley could replace Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., if Graham is tapped to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
For what it's worth, Haley did not reveal her post-UN plans but did say she will not run for president in 2020.
