Donald Trump has slammed The New York Times as a "failing" newspaper — but the "Old Grey Lady" says it's seen a huge jump in new subscribers since the billionaire real-estate tycoon was elected president earlier this month.

The Times has seen "a net increase of approximately 132,000 paid subscriptions to our news products. This represents a dramatic rate of growth, 10 times, the same period one year ago," the media company told CNBC on Tuesday.

The announcement comes two weeks after Mark Thompson, president and CEO of The New York Times Company, crowed:

"Our newsroom did exceptional work throughout the campaign and they have continued to provide our readers with penetrating and comprehensive coverage of the incoming administration.

"The result has been record-breaking audiences and tens of thousands of new subscribers — clear evidence of how much public demand there is for high quality, deeply reported, independent journalism."

Not that Trump necessarily agrees with that statement.

All through the election, The Times pounded away at the Republican presidential nominee, disclosing that he avoided paying taxes, had a campaign chief who had ties to Russian businesses and that his transition team was in chaos.

Trump took to Twitter to rip the coverage and even called off a meeting with The Times' editors last week before changing his mind and going forward with it:

Thompson told CNBC's "Squawk Box" program the "far from failing, we're seeing remarkable response."

At his meeting with The Times, Trump seemed to flip-flop on the negative things he had said about the newspaper, calling it "a great, great American jewel, a world jewel."
