New York City's subway authority issued a bulletin to all staff telling them to stop addressing riders as "ladies and gentlemen," according to the New York Post.

In a bulletin, the Metropolitan Transit Authority, ordered staff to replace that greeting, and listed words that would be acceptable, such as passengers, riders, or everyone, the Post reported.

"Please don't use any greeting other than these," the bulletin said. It also directed conductors on newer subway trains that have automated announcements not to use the prerecorded messages until they can be changed out to match the new order, the Post reported.

"They are acknowledging that they have some transgender riders. They don't want to offend anyone," Anthony Staley, member of the Transport Workers Union Local 100, told the Post.

Gender issues were a reason for the change, an MTA spokesperson reported to the Post.

"Our ability to take the next step in serving our customers is because of your expertise, good judgment, and willingness to try something new," the bulletin said, according to AM New York.
