Former Vice President Joe Biden claimed in an interview with CNN on the eve of the New Hampshire primary that President Donald Trump is targeting him, along with his son Hunter, because "he's deathly afraid to face me."
"Have you ever seen a sitting president spend as much time, money, and effort, including risking being impeached and thrown out of the office to decide to eliminate one of the potential opponents in a primary?" Biden asked CNN's Don Lemon. "This guy is obsessed with me and should be. I will beat him."
Biden also slammed Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, as well as the Justice Department's plan to get evidence from Giuliani and others concerning Ukraine.
"Are they using the Justice Department to try to justify what he did with Ukraine, or to try to get information on you?" Lemon asked.
"They can get all the information they want on me," Biden said. "Every person under oath in his administration who testified in the House says 'Biden is clean as a whistle. Biden did his job. Biden has great integrity.'"
Biden also predicted that Sen. Bernie Sanders' self-described Democratic socialist label will hurt the party's chances of winning control of the Senate if he's picked as the party's nominee. And Biden pointed out that Democrats in red states had asked him, not Sanders, to campaign with them in their 2018 midterm elections.
"Are you going to walk into any of those states we have to win, like Florida and other places that we're going to win, in Georgia and North Carolina," and select a socialist like Sanders, Biden added. "What do you think Trump is going to do with that?"
However, Biden did admit he faces an "uphill race" in New Hampshire, where he's polling far behind Sanders, I.-Vt., and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, but said that's because Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., are from neighboring states.
He added that he does not think a candidate can win the nomination without the support of the African American community and that he agrees with James Carville, the former top aide to President Bill Clinton who ridiculed Democrats for embracing liberal policies that are out of touch with black voters.
