Billionaire Elon Musk praised Netflix for telling employees to quit if they don't want to work on content they don’t agree with.

“Good move by @netflix,” Musk tweeted in response to a Wall Street Journal article detailing Netflix’s update to its culture guidelines that said “we let viewers decide what’s appropriate for them, versus having Netflix censor specific artists or voices.”

“Depending on your role, you may need to work on titles you perceive to be harmful,” Netflix said in its memo to employees under a new section titled “Artistic Expression.” “If you’d find it hard to support our content breadth, Netflix may not be the best place for you.”

A Netflix spokesman told the Journal the company updated its culture page last week for the first time since 2017. He also said Netflix had spent the past 18 months discussing cultural issues internally with employees.

The new language was added, he said, “so that prospective employees could understand our position, and make better-informed decisions about whether Netflix is the right company for them.”

Netflix employees last year protested over Dave Chapelle comedy special, and some staged a walkout. In the special, Chapelle made jokes about gender that many in the transgender community found offensive.

A group of transgender employees also sent a list of demands to Netflix management to recruit more trans people into leadership roles, create a new fund to develop trans and nonbinary talent, add a disclaimer before transphobic titles “that specifically flag transphobic language, misogyny, homophobia, hate speech, etc. as required.”
