National Enquirer Sparks Furor From Cruz, Denials From Trump

Ted Cruz is angrily denying a National Enquirer report that he engaged in extramarital affairs — and is blaming Donald Trump for the publication of the allegations.

"I want to be crystal clear: these attacks are garbage. For Donald J. Trump to enlist his friends at the National Enquirer and his political henchmen to do his bidding shows you that there is no low Donald won’t go," a seething Cruz said in a statement posted on Facebook.

"These smears are completely false, they’re offensive to Heidi and me, they’re offensive to our daughters, and they’re offensive to everyone Donald continues to personally attack.
"Donald Trump’s consistently disgraceful behavior is beneath the office we are seeking and we are not going to follow."

The Enquirer — which has brought down other politicians with stories about their affairs, including former Sens. John Edwards and Gary Hart — said Cruz’s alleged trysts stand to “destroy” his presidential hopes.

The Enquirer article also showed pictures of five women it said Cruz had allegedly played around with. Their faces are pixilated.

Trump, in a Facebook posting, denied any involvement in the Enquirer story, and then went on to taunt his rival about its accuracy.

"I have no idea whether or not the cover story about Ted Cruz in this week’s issue of the National Enquirer is true or not, but I had absolutely nothing to do with it, did not know about it, and have not, as yet, read it," Trump wrote.

"Likewise, I have nothing to do with the National Enquirer and unlike Lyin’ Ted Cruz I do not surround myself with political hacks and henchman and then pretend total innocence."

The Enquirer has officially endorsed Trump for president and has featured critical some of his top rivals. The Enquirer reported on Dr. Ben Carson’s medical history, claiming he had been hit by a string of malpractice lawsuits.

In the lead up to the Florida primary, another Enquirer story featured Marco Rubio on the cover with a headline of "gay arrest." The tabloid’s story indicated that at age 18 Rubio had been issued a police summons for drinking in a Miami park after hours.

"Ted Cruz’s problem with the National Enquirer is his and his alone, and while they were right about O.J. Simpson, John Edwards, and many others, I certainly hope they are not right about Lyin’ Ted Cruz," Trump concluded in his Facebook response.

In its expose, The Enquirer quotes Roger Stone, a veteran GOP political consultant who advised Trump early in his campaign, as saying rumors of affairs have been “swirling around Cruz for some time.”

Reached by USA Today on Friday, Stone, insisted: “I played no role in the placement of the story.”
