Nancy Pelosi: AG Firing Was to 'Curtail' Mueller Probe

House Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi believes President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions to "curtail" the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller — and the move put the nation in "a perilously constitutional moment."

In an interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo aired Thursday night, the California lawmaker said she does not see the ouster as a "constitutional crisis just yet."

"This is a perilously constitutional moment," she said. "This is a very important moment. I hope the president is not frivolous about it. [Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker] should not be there because of the statements he's made already" criticizing the Mueller probe.

"There are plenty of people who could be confirmed," she said.

She said it seems clear why the ouster came about.

"I think [Trump's] been outspoken in saying he wanted to curtail the Mueller investigation, that it should be curtailed," Pelosi said.

"The president appoints with the advice and with the confirmation of the senate. That didn't happen," she said of the selection for acting AG. "This appointment makes a mockery of the constitution and the vision of our founders."

"Our concern is that they will interfere and say the president is above the law," she added. "Our chairman and ranking members in the House have sent a letter saying we must preserve the documents of the Mueller investigation . . . the preservation of the documents is essential."
