House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has begun meeting with Democratic candidates that could prevent her from reassuming the speakership should the party retake the House, Politico reports.
According to Politico, there are 43 Democrats running in districts that are leaning Democrat, likely Democrat or a toss-up. Of those, 11 have said they would not support Pelosi becoming speaker, though only four said they would actually vote against her. In order to drum up support, the congresswoman raised $6.7 million to go towards “Red to Blue” candidates looking to flip a district, helped organize phone banks and other voter outreach tactics for a California House candidate that has yet to voice their position on Pelosi.
“There’s a charm offensive underway, and there’s a real effort on [Pelosi’s] part to reach out to these campaigns and offer help, even to those who seem to be distancing themselves or flat out rejecting her,” said an unnamed senior Democratic aide. “They know what the political reality is.”
Another Democrat who is working on House campaigns added, “She’s endearing herself to these candidates and she’s building relationships with them, laying that groundwork. But her primary objective is flipping the House.”
Pelosi’s office declined to comment on the story.
