Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney says the U.S. “needs more immigrants” for the economy to continue growing.
Mulvaney made his remarks at a private gathering in England on Wednesday night. The Washington Post said it obtained an audio recording of his remarks.
“We are desperate — desperate — for more people,” Mulvaney said. “We are running out of people to fuel the economic growth that we’ve had in our nation over the last four years. We need more immigrants.”
The Post noted his remarks appear to contrast the position of several top figures in the White House who have been working to cut both legal and illegal immigration.
Mulvaney said that the Trump administration wants more foreign workers, despite the President Donald Trump’s “anti-immigrant” reputation.
And the Post pointed out that the number of immigration visas issued by the State Department has dropped by 17% since Trump took office.
