Most of America’s polluted cities are located in California, according to the American Lung Association’s annual “State of the Air” report.
The report, released Wednesday, found that six of the 10 cities with the worst short-term air pollution in the U.S. are in California.
Bakersfield, Visalia, Fresno, Modesto, San Francisco and Los Angeles are on the list, according to USA Today.
Bakersfield is at the top of the list while Visalia, Fresno and Modesto are second, third and fourth on the list.
Paul Billings of the American Lung Association points to the increase in population as one of the main reasons why California has so many cities with unhealthy levels of air pollution, USA Today reported.
Billings also said that California would be worse off if it wasn’t for the laws that have been put in place pertaining to tailpipe pollution.
“They’ve done more than any other state to counteract air pollution,” Billings said, according to USA Today.
This annual report started nearly 20 years ago.
“While most of the nation has much cleaner air quality than even a decade ago, many cities reported their highest number of unhealthy days since the report began,” the report said.
According to Mashable, short-term pollution is not the only area where cities in California struggle. Eight California cities are in the bottom 10 for worst year-round pollution. The state also has seven cities with the most ozone-polluted air.
