Morgan Freeman will play former Secretary of State Colin Powell in an upcoming film about the retired Army general and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will focus on Powell's time at the State Department, 2001-2005, under President George W. Bush.

Reginald Hudlin will direct the film using a script written by Ed Whitworth.

The film will reportedly include the lead-up to Powell's 2003 speech in front of the United Nations Security Council, during which he called for military action against then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein because it was believed that he had weapons of mass destruction in his control.

Powell wrote a book in 2012 that talked about that speech. The intelligence he and the Bush administration cited was later proved wrong. Powell said that still bothers him.

"Yes, a blot, a failure will always be attached to me and my UN presentation," he wrote. "I am mad mostly at myself for not having smelled the problem. My instincts failed me."
