Former talk-show host Montel Williams slammed the Republican presidential candidates Tuesday for lacking a coherent plan for the nation's veterans, saying of front-runner Donald Trump's plan, "please, let's stop."

"If we really wanted to understand how we could correct some of the issues in the military, we are wasting time by not utilizing the number one resource this country has," Williams, a retired Navy lieutenant commander, told Brianna Keilar on CNN.

"Unfortunately, we live in a time in America where less than 20 percent of our entire elected officials in this country ever put a uniform on and serve themselves," he said. "Yet, these same people are quick to send our children off to die."

"When they come home, they are slow to make sure they get the treatment, the care and all the things they deserve," Williams said.

In October, Trump outlined his plan for reforming the Department of Veterans Affairs, arguing that veterans should to be able to receive treatment any time they want from any doctor or center that accepts Medicare.

The change, he said, would help improve wait times and services by adding competition.

Trump's program also included improved health services for female veterans, providing new incentives for companies to hire veterans and making available new assistance to help veterans adjust to civilian life.

But a far more comprehensive program is needed, Williams told CNN.

"A lot of things have happened in the last two years that have corrected a lot of the deficiencies," he said. "I want to understand how we're going to utilize veterans and this resource we're letting go out to pasture."

"I want to hear more plans. I have 20 of them," he added. "But they all talk rhetoric and games about how to do something better — and we still leave veterans on the battlefield here at home."

"Let's stop the stupid."
