Democrats are harshly criticizing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., after he said Republicans would fill a Supreme Court seat in 2020 if one became available, The Hill reported Wednesday.

Democrats were furious at McConnell when in 2016 he refused to hold a vote, or even give a hearing to then President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who had passed away.

One of the main reasons McConnell stated at the time was it was not appropriate to fill a new seat during a presidential election year, because the voters should have the opportunity to decide who should be the person in the White House that makes the appointment.

After McConnell's statement this week, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called him a "hypocrite," writing on Twitter:

"McConnell lives for GOP judges because he knows the GOP agenda is so radical & unpopular they can only achieve it in courts."

Democratic presidential hopeful Julian Castro also slammed the GOP leader, writing in a tweet:

"We've known all along how hypocritical the @senatemajldr is. But his shamelessness at stealing a Supreme Court seat is appalling."

He added in the continuation of his tweet:

"As president, I will work with the entire Senate to get my appointments confirmed, but won't hesitate to make a recess appointment to the Court if the Senate refuses to consider my nominee."

The Supreme Court has increasingly been discussed in recent weeks as a number of states passed laws restricting abortion rights, indicating the high court could eventually make a landmark ruling on the issue.
