Top Senate Republicans Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley said Thursday that they will emphasize to President Barack Obama next week that the next commander-in-chief should put forth the nominee to succeed Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia.

"We look forward to reiterating to him directly that the American people will be heard and the next Supreme Court justice will be determined once the elections are complete," the senators said.

McConnell, of Kentucky, is the Senate majority leader. Grassley, of Iowa, is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. They will meet with Obama Tuesday at the White House.

Senate Republicans have declared that no hearings will be held on any possible successor to Scalia, who died on Feb. 13, until after a new president takes office next January.

"We welcome the opportunity to further discuss matters of mutual interest, like the drug epidemic that's tearing communities apart across our country," the senators said.
