Many Asylum Seekers Don't Qualify, Expect Entry Anyway

By    |   Wednesday, 27 December 2023 10:29 AM EST

Some of the 11,000 migrants waiting in Mexico to enter the United States know they do not qualify for asylum, but they have received messages from past migrant crossers that it will not matter.

Under President Joe Biden, those who have gotten across the border, including with reportedly free flights and hotel accommodations, are sharing the messages with those that remain in Mexico, awaiting their potential crossing, CNN's Rosa Flores reported on CNN's "OutFront" on Tuesday night.

Flores' report cited a Mexico shelter director that said potential crossers "know that they don't qualify for asylum in the U.S.," but they remain undeterred because of the word-of-mouth success at getting across into the U.S.

Newsmax border analysts, including former U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan and border correspondent Jaeson Jones, note that asylum seekers are often given a future data to appear but they do not and merely accept the court date to get entry into the U.S.

"But asylum is the law in the United States, and so, many of them are still trying to enter the United States and plan to seek asylum, many of them blinded by the videos and voice messages that they've received from other migrants who have crossed the border, turned themselves in to immigration authorities, and have been released to American communities," Flores told CNN's "OutFront."

A large migrant caravan of mostly Central American and Caribbean migrants Sunday had walked more than 9 miles from the southern Mexico border city Tapachula toward the U.S. southern border.

"We won't be stopped, we'll keep walking," migrant rights activist Luis Garcia Villagran said defiantly.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken heads to Mexico on Wednesday in hopes of showing headway in tackling surging migration, which has climbed to the top of political headaches for President Joe Biden as he enters an election year.

The unusual Christmas week trip by the top U.S. diplomat was abruptly scheduled as the rival Republican Party presses Biden for a migration crackdown in return for agreeing in Congress to one of his key priorities — support for Ukraine.
