Nearly 60 percent of Americans expect a foreign government to meddle in the upcoming midterm elections, concerns that are split down party lines, according to the latest Axios/SurveyMonkey poll.

The results, according to Axios:

  • 58 percent believe it is somewhat to very likely that a foreign entity will try to meddle in the midterms.
  • 39 percent don't believe it is likely.
  • 58 percent of Republicans don't think it's likely to happen.
  • 77 percent of Democrats think it's likely to happen.
  • 56 percent of independents think it's likely to happen vs. 42 percent who don't.

Despite those fears, 64 percent are confident in the elections systems and that votes will be counted accurately, though just 24 percent are "very confident" that their vote will be counted accurately, down 11 points from a Gallup poll two years ago.

At issue: 14 states - including five that have no paper trail whatsoever - lack the ability to double-check electronic votes.

However, 68 percent trust their vote to be counted electronically compared to 75 percent who trust their vote to be counted accurately via paper ballot.

Voters are split evenly - 48 percent each - regarding their preference of paper ballot vs. voting electronically, according to the survey.

This online poll was conducted May 23-26 among 2,499 adults in the United States. The modeled error estimate for the full sample is 2.5 percentage points.
