Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney has expressed interest in becoming the next president of the University of South Carolina, The New York Times is reporting.

Mulvaney discussed the post with a senior official at the school late last year, according to the newspaper. At the time, he had not yet been named acting chief of staff.

The newspaper attributed the information to four people. The Times said Mulvaney had initiated the discussion about the job.

A person close to Mulvaney said he was still interested in the university post as recently as last week. The job will become open this summer.

However, the White House denied Mulvaney, who had served as a congressman from South Carolina, is interested in any outside positions.

“Mick Mulvaney is focused on faithfully executing the job the president has asked him to do, and as such he is not interested in any other positions,” Hogan Gidley, a White House spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the university claimed it was just beginning is search process.

“The search committee is committed to recruiting a diverse pool of highly qualified candidates,” said Wes Hickman, a spokesman for the school. “However, we will not discuss or identify applicants until finalists are named.”

The Post and Courier reported that Mulvaney would have to win over faculty and students because he does not have an academic background. However, the newspaper said, his hiring would be seen as a high-profile catch for the university.
