McCaul: Unexploded Bombs Mean Extra Forensic Evidence

The fact that none of the pipe bombs addressed to former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other liberal figures exploded, means there will be a great deal of forensic evidence that could quickly lead to a suspect, House Homeland Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said Thursday.

"We have all of the materials of the bomb, possibly DNA evidence attached to them," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"We have the packages. I predict that we're going to find the suspect in the next several days."

McCaul noted that during a spate of bombings in his hometown of Austin earlier this year, it took about 18 days to find the culprit, but bombs had been exploded in that case.

"There is a lot of forensic evidence that we have that we probably didn't have in the Austin case," said McCaul, agreeing with some estimates that the culprit "could possibly be" caught even on Thursday.

The fact that the bombs did not blow up, or did not appear to have been set up to explode, meant that the sender or senders were looking to create a hoax through intimidation tactics, said McCaul.

"As I understand bombs these bombs could explode, but unlike in the Austin bomber case, the packages when you opened them up, they would explode, in this case, they are not," said McCaul.

"That is a major distinction, and I know that theory has been kind of posited out there in the investigation world as a significant piece of evidence that they are maybe not designed it to explode."
