The office of House Rules Committee Chair Michael Burgess, R-Texas, issued a statement on the congressman's X account on Monday, informing the electorate that his eldest daughter, Christine Burgess, passed away in her sleep over the weekend.
"It's with heavy hearts we regret to share that congressman Burgess' eldest daughter, Christine Burgess, passed away in her sleep this past weekend," the X post read. "Congressman Burgess appreciates all of the thoughts & prayers & respectfully requests privacy for his family at this difficult time."
The cause of Christine's death was not made public. Burgess, 73, did not seek reelection this year. The House has to name a replacement for his chair position. GOP Rep.-elect Brandon Gill will be next to represent Burgess' district, which includes Cooke County, the majority of Denton County, and parts of Tarrant and Wise counties in Texas.
